Spontaneous camping trips, famous meetings and Shuttle launches, oh my!

We spent the evening preparing for a last minute camping trip this upcoming weekend to Stephen F. Austin State Park. It's been April since we've had the camper out due to a number of different reasons. Those reasons aside, we're excited to play outdoors for a change. If the Space Shuttle launches tomorrow as planned (right now anyway) Melissa will have to come home early on Sunday to view the Shuttle mission activities. Soooo this made for a good excuse for me to go out and buy the Motorola Talkabout 2-way radios that we've been meaning to get for a while now. (since we'll be caravaning to the campground, they'll be nice and if we have to evacuate for a hurricane anytime in the future, they're nice to have then too.) I picked these puppies up at Academy. They're the 10 mile version with the weather alert feature (nice for hurricanes). They also came with standard yellow trim, or optional camo trim - sweet!

On a related note, Melissa met Gene Kranz tonight on console. He stopped the control room and met everyone. Melissa and Mr Kranz talked about a couple of things ranging from what Melissa does on console to Skylab and joking about similaries in flight controller operations from the past to the present. If you don't know who Gene Kranz is, you should be ashamed of yourself!
